Production sector

Nursery, Flowers and Ornamentals

This sector produces plants and flowers for decorative rather than food use: cut flowers (roses, chrysanthemums, gerbera, lilies, carnations), foliage, potted and seasonal plants such as poinsettia and marigold, and nursery stock — ornamentals, grafted fruit trees and forestry seedlings. Much of it is grown under greenhouse and shade house, with intensive fertigation, climate and plant health management. The product is perishable and fragile, and appearance is the product: a stem damaged at harvest cannot be recovered.

Which roles it hires

Growers hire propagation technicians (grafting, cuttings, seed and tissue culture), greenhouse managers, and fertigation and nutrition specialists, along with integrated pest management leads who rely heavily on biological control, since chemical residue limits both sales and plant movement. Harvest and postharvest roles include cutting supervisors, grading, bunching and packing staff, and cold chain coordinators, because vase life depends on temperature and hydration from the first minute. Nurseries lean on plant health and phytosanitary certification profiles to move stock across states or borders, alongside sales and logistics. It is manual, detail-driven work done on your feet, with sharp peaks set by the calendar dates that drive the market.

Where it is concentrated

In Mexico the densest floriculture corridor sits in the southern State of Mexico (Villa Guerrero, Tenancingo, Coatepec Harinas) and extends into Morelos, Puebla, Michoacán and Jalisco; Baja California grows flowers and foliage for export, and Veracruz supplies foliage and palm. In Latin America, Colombia's Bogotá savanna and Antioquia, along with Ecuador's highlands, are the benchmark export hubs. Seasonality is set by holidays: Day of the Dead and marigold, poinsettia at year-end, Valentine's Day and Mother's Day concentrate both workload and temporary hiring.
