Research, development and breeding is the work of creating and testing what will be planted several cycles from now: new varieties and hybrids, rootstocks, and also nutrition products, biologicals and crop protection chemistry before they reach the market. It runs on crosses, selection, replicated multi-location trials and statistical analysis — not on a single good-looking plot.

The day moves between trial plots, breeding greenhouses, research stations and the lab. The work is meticulous and repetitive: emasculating and hand-pollinating, tagging, keeping field books, taking data on vigor, disease, yield, firmness, soluble solids and shelf life, then cleaning and analyzing all of it. Lab work adds in vitro propagation, seed testing or marker-assisted selection depending on the company. There is greenhouse heat, planting and harvest windows that cannot be postponed, and research stations that tend to sit far from cities. One trait worth knowing before you sign on: answers take years, and today's work shows its result several cycles later.
What employers look for
Employers ask for agronomy, biology, biotechnology or genetics; a graduate degree is common for lead breeder roles and close to standard in public research. Statistics and experimental design carry real weight — being able to analyze a trial, not just plant it — along with English for the literature and for reporting to head office. Senior roles add variety registration, plant breeders' rights and national seed regulation. Field judgment is valued: the person who can read a plant selects better than the one who only reads the spreadsheet.
Where it is in demand
The jobs sit with domestic and international seed companies, nurseries and propagation labs, R&D groups in crop protection, plant nutrition and biologicals, public institutes and universities (INIFAP, Chapingo, Colegio de Postgraduados, the region's INIA network), and large growers running their own programs. In Mexico the work concentrates in the Bajío (Guanajuato, Querétaro), Sinaloa, Jalisco, Sonora, Baja California and the Texcoco-Montecillo area. In South America, Chile stands out for counter-season breeding programs, alongside Peru, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia.
