Precision Agriculture and Ag Tech
Precision agriculture and ag tech is about using data to make field decisions: how much water, how much fertilizer, where and when, instead of treating the whole block the same. It runs on drone and satellite imagery, soil moisture probes, weather stations, GPS and RTK guidance on machinery, irrigation telemetry and farm management software. The deliverable is not a good-looking map — it is a recommendation someone will actually execute in the field.

The work splits between the field and the desk. In the field you install and calibrate sensors, fly drones, verify that irrigation is applying what the report claims and check guidance on machinery; at the desk you process orthomosaics and vegetation indices, clean data, build variable-rate prescriptions and write reports. A large part of the job is teaching — sitting down with the foreman, the irrigator and the grower to explain why the map says what it says. There is constant driving between ranches, signal drops exactly where you need it, and equipment gets muddy, wet and broken. The bottleneck is rarely the technology; it is adoption, and convincing someone who has irrigated by calendar for decades is the hard part of the role.
What employers look for
There are two ways in: agronomists who learned data and GIS, or engineers (software, mechatronics, geomatics, irrigation) who learned the crop — and employers prefer people who can speak both languages. They ask for GIS (QGIS or ArcGIS), serious spreadsheet skills and, increasingly, SQL, Python or dashboard tools such as Power BI. Drone work means complying with the national aviation authority — AFAC in Mexico: aircraft registration and, depending on the weight and use of the equipment, the corresponding authorization — plus real processing experience, not just flight time. English matters because documentation, manufacturer support and a good share of the platforms are in English, and a driver's license and willingness to travel are standard requirements.
Where it is in demand
Hiring comes from mid-size and large growers with their own acreage, irrigation integrators, machinery and technology dealers, ag tech companies, input suppliers with a digital services arm, and technical consultancies. In Mexico the demand sits in Sinaloa, Sonora, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Chihuahua, Baja California and Tamaulipas, with protected agriculture adding greenhouse automation and climate control roles. Regionally, Argentina and Brazil concentrate the broadacre work with variable rate and machine telemetry, while Chile and Peru concentrate drip and precision irrigation in tree fruit.
