The work splits between shop and field: service by engine hours, oil and filter changes, welding, hydraulics, electrical systems and electronic diagnostics on auto-guidance tractors; in the packing house, belts, sizers, hydrocoolers and refrigeration compressors; in irrigation, pumps, motors, filters and valves. It is physical, dirty work with heat, dust and grease, sometimes at height or in confined spaces, under safety rules that are not negotiable. During planting and harvest a breakdown stops the whole operation, so there are on-call shifts, night repairs and Sunday work; the off season is when major overhauls happen. A good part of the trade is keeping logs and staying ahead: whoever only fixes what already broke is always behind.
What employers look for
Companies look for a technical degree or engineering in mechanics, electromechanics, mechatronics or agricultural machinery, and gladly take people trained in the shop who can prove it with their hands. Diesel engines, hydraulics and pneumatics, electrical systems and scanner diagnostics, welding, and refrigeration where there is a cold chain are all requested; reading manuals and diagrams in English is common. Manufacturer certifications for tractors and irrigation equipment, a driver's license, refrigerant handling where it applies, and the ability to run a maintenance plan with its spare parts inventory all add value. Supervisory roles also require leading a team of mechanics and controlling the shop budget.
Where it is in demand
Employers include mechanized farming operations, sugar mills and food processors, packing houses and cold storage facilities, greenhouses, irrigation companies, and machinery dealers with their service shops. In Mexico there is demand across every mechanized farming region — Sinaloa, Sonora, Chihuahua, La Laguna, the Bajío and the sugarcane areas of Veracruz and Jalisco; in South America, across the farming belt of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
