Before start-up the work is volume recruiting, sometimes in the workers' home communities, including transport, housing and social security enrollment; during the season it is attendance and piece-rate control, payroll, safety and food safety training, and daily conflict resolution. Time is spent in the field, in the packing house and at the labor camp: talking with crew leaders and workers is part of the job, not an extra. The area increasingly handles customers' social audits and verifies that there is no child labor, that pay is correct, and that housing and water conditions are decent. It is emotionally demanding work with early starts in season, and its decisions land on concrete things: people's pay, transport and housing.
What employers look for
Employers ask for business administration, psychology, labor relations or law, though many hire people who have already managed large crews, degree or not. Command of national labor law, social security enrollment and filings, payroll and piece-rate calculation, and the safety standards that apply to farm work is non-negotiable. Social audits from international customers weigh heavily, and speaking the workers' language — beyond Spanish, in several regions Mixtec, Nahuatl, Triqui or Zapotec — is a genuine advantage, not a line on a résumé.
Where it is in demand
This profile is hired by farming companies with large crews, packing houses, greenhouses, food processors and exporters subject to customer audits. In Mexico demand concentrates where labor is intensive: Sinaloa, Baja California, Michoacán, Jalisco, Guanajuato, Sonora, Chihuahua and Zacatecas; in South America, in Chile's central valley, coastal Peru, Ecuador and Colombia.
